Flood

Faith Q&A › Metropolitan Youssef › Holy Scripture › Flood

The question

"I establish my covenant with you, never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood, never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth..." (Genesis 9:11-17). How does this verse relate to the current events of floods in Asia?

The answer

God never breaks His covenants. His covenant with Noah is clear "Never again will ALL LIFE be cut off by the waters" (Genesis 9:11). What happened recently did not wipe out life from the face of the earth as at Noah's time. These natural disasters are permitted by God throughout history. This last one might be of enormous gravity compared to others; but nevertheless it did not wipe out 'all life' as God promised.
