Holy Book of Song of Songs

Faith Q&A › Metropolitan Youssef › Holy Scripture › Holy Book of Song of Songs

The question

"The sun has tanned me" (Song 1:6). Is the sun a reference to the Sun of righteousness, and that a comparison between the sun and us would show us to be dark? Is the sun a reference to God, or is it a reference to this world?

The answer

Depending on which attribute of the sun is considered, it is used in the Gospel to refer to both: the Sun of Righteousness or trials. Here, in this context, the sun refers to the sun of life trials and tribulations as she explained. The demands of the world and the busy life make the believers as common keepers of vineyards. Thus they loose focus on their spiritual life and consequently lose their own beauty.
