Comma Johannine

Faith Q&A › Metropolitan Youssef › Holy Scripture › Comma Johannine

The question

I came across these sites:

It appears as though this came in to the Holy Bible through a translation of the Vulgate, however, not the original one by St. Jerome, but rather, it was added later by a man named Erasmus. Is this true, or have I stumbled on an undependable source?

The answer

The reason for the controversy is because some early manuscripts do include these verses. However, if all the manuscripts pointed in the same direction, we would not have a controversy. Therefore, there are different versions to study, but the absolute answer will probably remain inconclusive.
