St. Mary

Faith Q&A › Metropolitan Youssef › St. Mary and the Saints › St. Mary

The question

I know St. Mary gave birth to the Lord Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit of God and she is a virgin. After the birth of the Lord, did she have any more children because in the scriptures, it says that Jesus had 4 brothers: James, Joseph (Joses), Judas (Jude) and Simon.

The answer

When we say St. Mary remained a virgin throughout her life, it also means she had no other children because she remained a virgin. James, Joses, Jude, and Simon were close relatives. It was and still is customary in these regions to refer to close relatives as brothers.
