Crowning Ceremony

Faith Q&A › Metropolitan Youssef › The Sacraments › Crowning Ceremony

The question

In Malachi 2:14, marriage is described as a covenant. However, I am unable to find any mention of "covenant" in the Crowning Ceremony Prayer. How come this element of marriage is not emphasized in the sacrament? How exactly should marriage be understood in regards to covenant?

The answer

The entire Crowning Ceremony, constituted by these special and specific prayers, readings, hymns, responses, blessings, vows, litanies, and instructions, are the elements that compose the marital covenant. A covenant is not merely a written contract, but a firm promise to keep all these sacred vows, and the bride and groom truly unite and become one by the power of the Holy Spirit who descends upon them. Thus, the Crowning Ceremony (Marriage) is one of the seven Holy Mysteries of the Church.
