Remarriage

Faith Q&A › Metropolitan Youssef › Marriage and Family › Remarriage

The question

I was not raised with religion and I was married by a civil ceremony outside of any church.  We were divorced due to domestic violence. Can I marry a Coptic man in the Church?

The answer

You need to present all the documents regarding your previous marriage and your divorce to the assigned committee of clergy from the Coptic Orthodox Church for your area to review. You should start with the priest of your church to guide you in submitting all the necessary documentation. You must also be a believer in the Church doctrine, not merely for the sake of marriage, but for your personal salvation.
