The question

Can it only happen if people do black magic to harm the person or can it just happen if you live a sinful life?

The answer

There is no such thing as "black magic" that someone can perform on someone else, unless that someone is willing to believe this. Repentance is the remedy for a sinful life, and Confession is the cure.
